Malezia Dermatitis in a West Highland?

I recently bought a 2 year old Westie female, only to discover that she has Malezia Dermatitis. The vet claims that the only treatment for this is medication that will cost about €1000 a year. I am very concerned about her, as she is such a lovely dog and don't want her to be in pain or to be uncomfortable. Can anyone help me on this, are there any other options? This was our first Westie, and I'm really shocked that the dogs could be bred to the extent that this condition is happening..
