When giving to a charity on behalf of XYZ, should I give to my charity of choice or the choice of XYZ?

My mother-in-law wants to give to charity on our behalf for the holidays. My husband and I want the charity dollars to go to either the Humane Society or a children's cause. My mother-in-law wants the dollars to go to her church. What is the correct procedure on this?
